2001 Torra Tirant, Rotllan, Priorat x 6 2005-2020 6 Bottles £340.00 £427.20: "A prodigious effort, the 2001 Tirant is a 9,000-bottle cuvee made from 30% Grenache (90-100 years old), 25% Carignan (90-100 years old), 25% young vine Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah, and 10% Merlot. Fermented in large oak foudres and aged 12 months in new French oak, it will be bottled with neither fining nor filtration. Inky/purple-colored to the rim, it boasts a spectacular bouquet of blueberries, blackberries, and the region’s classic crushed stone minerality. This full-throttle yet remarkably elegant 2001 possesses tremendous intensity and texture as well as layers of flavor, but comes across as not over the top, overripe, or overly heavy. The 60-second finish reveals more noticeable tannin than the other cuvees. Give it 1-2 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 10-15. With extraordinary richness, full body, and remarkable freshness, elegance, and persistence, this is one of the finest wines ever made by this estate. Very deep crimson colour. Stunning aromas of dark cherries, spice and orange peel. Rich flavours of plums and blueberries; well integrated, toasty oak and a long, supple finish. Absolutely delicious.

Intense cherry aromas are followed by layers of sweet ripe fruit on the palate. Long, balanced, finish, this is really stunning.

2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Belcanto, Domaine de Canteperdrix, Vin de Pays de Cassan x 6 2009-2015 6 Bottles £58.00 £84.00: Beautiful aromas of ripe blackcurrant, black cherry and wild herbs – this has a wonderfully seductive sun-ripened perfume. Then lots of superb cool fruits on the palate – creamy cassis and wonderful mint, eucalypt and mineral complexity – this could only be Cabernet Sauvignon. The fruit is wonderfully succulent, ripe and textured and there is none of the austerity which is so often found in less expensive Cabernets. Really well structured, this is wonderfully balanced and long. Beautifully made in quite a grown up style.

Intensely perfumed nose offers a seductive array of red berry and cherry scents, with garrigue and anise nuances adding complexity. Palate-staining raspberry and cherry flavors are deep and strikingly pure, carrying through on the long, spicy finish. It is a blend of 65% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre, and 5% the other red grapes of the appellation. This is a beauty and no doubt the best buy among this trio of offerings. Complex aromas of rose petals, violets, mocha, blackberries and ripe black plums leads into a palate layered with ripe, rich, smooth, satin-textured dark fruits. The fine, lacy tannins are interwoven with a fresh, elegant minerality giving great drive through the palate – there is excellent precision and focus, poise and balance. All the building components of acidity, tannin, wood and alcohol are judiciously and impressively integrated. It is a blend of 90% Merlot and the rest equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc made by Christine Valette and her husband Xavier Pariente with the consultancy help of Michel Rolland. I-m not sure what the heady alcohol level is in Troplong Mondot in 2010 (it certainly must be in the 15%+ range), but it is well-concealed behind the extravagant, richness, full-bodied power, and pure nobility of this majestic wine. This estate has been on a hot streak of late. The 2010 is a slightly bigger, richer wine, but without losing its floral, elegant mulberry, black raspberry and sweet kirsch notes. Combine those with some licorice, subtle new oak and a hint of forest floor, and the result is a medium to full-bodied, rich, complex wine that has striking aromatics and perfect balance in the mouth. 2010 Château Haut Brion, 1er Cru Graves x 3 2019-2069 3 Bottles £1,994.00 £2,400.00: "As for the 2010 Haut-Brion, it does not have the power of Latour’s 2010 or the intense lead pencil shavings and chocolaty component of Lafite-Rothschild, but it is extraordinary, perfect wine. It has a slightly lower pH than the 2009 (3.7 versus the 2009's 3.8), and even higher alcohol than the 2009 (14.6%). The wine is ethereal. From its dense purple color to its incredibly subtle but striking aromatics that build incrementally, offering up a spectacular smorgasbord of aromas ranging from charcoal and camphor to black currant and blueberry liqueur and spring flowers, this wine’s finesse, elegant yet noble power and authority come through in a compelling fashion. It is full-bodied, but that’s only apparent in the aftertaste, as the wine seems to float across the palate with remarkable sweetness, harmony, and the integration of all its component parts – alcohol, tannin, acidity, wood, etc. This prodigious Haut-Brion is hard to compare to another vintage, at least right now, but it should have 50 to 75 years of aging potential. A blend of 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 19% Cabernet Franc, it is interesting to taste the 2011 Haut-Brion next to the more open-knit, seductive 2011 La Mission Haut-Brion. The former wine is more firm, backward and earthy with a more formidably structured style. Undeniably elegant, distinctive and original, it exhibits notes of mulberries, plums, blueberries and raspberries. Jean-Philippe Delmas told me that in many ways the 2011 reminds him of the 2008 from an aromatic and structural profile. There is plenty of tannin, and the 2011 has 25-30 years of aging potential. Exhibiting a deep ruby/purple color, lots of crushed rock, red and black currant, forest floor and underbrush characteristics, moderate tannin and medium body, it is built somewhat along the lines of the 1999 and 2001. It should be a 20- to 25-year wine, but it is not at the level of the 2008, 2009 and 2010. Fresh acids give the wine a somewhat more clipped feeling than most great Lafites have exhibited. Confit grapes. Sweet and yet very precise nose. The palate is dominated by ripe crushed raspberries with hints of white pepper spice and attractive grapefruit notes. Very crisp and dry – a structured very grown up rosé. This has to be the purest most precise and floral rosé any Cotat has made in at least 10 years. Stupendous!
