Clarion Wines was founded in 2005 by three partners with long wine trade experience, and backed by a group of shareholders from a wide variety of professional backgrounds.  Since we began trading, four of our shareholders have served on our Advisory Board, combining their boundless enthusiasm for the great wines of the world with their inestimable business experience and expertise.

Patrick Barran joined the wine trade in 1987 and worked successively for Grants of St. James's, Bibendum, and Armit Wines.  He looks after corporate clients, particularly Oxford and Cambridge colleges, St James's clubs, Livery Companies and City firms as well as a large number of private buyers.

Richard Berkley-Matthews began his wine trade career with Laytons in 1991, becoming a shareholder and staying for nearly 10 years.  He then moved to Armit Wines where he met Patrick, and where he worked for 5 years, also becoming a shareholder.  Having established strong relationships with many producers, particularly in Burgundy, the Rhône Valley, Bordeaux and Tuscany, he looks after all the buying which is done from source.  He is also responsible for much of the day to day administration of the business, as well as looking after a number of private buyers.

Alex Robertson joined Clarion in 2021 after 3 years at Bancroft, nearly 5 years at Armit Wines and 3 years at Wine Invest.  He principally looks after private clients.

Ottilia Rose joined the team in 2020 to help with the administration, particularly the processing of stock transfers and deliveries.  She has a background in computer programming, having developed the book keeping and invoicing packages which we use – and consequently has a strong eye for detail!
