The Ampeleia Estate in Maremma, Coastal Tuscany

Proprietress Elisabetta Foradori, long well known for the lovely wines she produces in Trentino, has with the help of her highly-skilled team also been crafting great wines in the Maremma in coastal Tuscany for some years now, at the Ampeleia Estate. The top wine, named Ampeleia, is made from a blend dominated by Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese, with all of the wonderful aromas and flavours that these two varieties bring in tandem with fine structural elements. The beautifully aromatic 2013 Ampeleia (newly released & now available through Clarion at £123 In Bond per case of six bottles) is packed with ripe fruit combining dark plum and black cherry notes, with the freshness, focus and succulence of red berry fruit flavours. The tannins are ripe and fine and already well integrated, giving the wine a supple and rounded feel – it’s already a complete a pleasure to drink but will repay another 12-18 months cellaring. The fruit really sings on the finish and reveals more complex flavours of spice and tobacco. Long, fine and very stylish. Drink this beauty from now, until 2022.

Another fabulous new release from the estate is Kepos 2014, made with fruit from those Ampeleia vineyards situated closest to the sea: Mediterranean scrub fills the air with fragrance and this is very much reflected in the beautifully perfumed, richly fruity and rounded Kepos. Very attractive, vibrant red fruits mingle on the nose with notes of herbs and flowers. A blend of the traditional Rhône varieties Grenache, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Alicante Bouschet and Marselan, giving a deliciously rich, juicy, mouth-filling fruit character. The palate also possesses a freshness and focus that is the hallmark of the best wines of this vintage in the Maremma. It’s fabulous! Drink now to 2019. Kepos 2014 is available at £80.00 In Bond per case of six bottles.
